Chelating agents matter when the residue problem is minerals, not oil. Hard water can leave calcium and magnesium on the hair surface, while copper and iron can dull or shift color.

A cleanser removes oil. A chelator binds minerals. Those are different jobs, which is why hard-water hair often needs a different reset than product buildup.
